Jewellery

This video recalibrates the history of feminism by narrating the uncanny similarities between Russian feminists of the 19th century and British suffragettes. These connections are voiced by a 3D-rendering of a particular type of suffragette jewellery known as the 'Holloway Brooch'. This was as an award given to militant feminists who were incarcerated for their political actions at the beginning of the 20th century in Holloway prison. The brooch came to be associated with the tortures and hunger strikes that took place there. By speaking about the entanglement of these two histories of feminism, the video highlights their shared conflicts: with the disciplinary measures of the police state and the discriminatory procedures of the patriarchy. What would come to the surface if we look at an expanded notion of feminist history? And how would the future look back on all of these accounts?
